Registered Nurse Float - ED - Emergency Department Float
I. Job Summary: Employee administers professional nursing care to patients in the ED Department and performs a variety of direct and indirect patient care duties and activities.

II. Minimum Qualifications:
A. Education
1. High school graduate or equivalent.
2. Successful completion of an accredited school of registered nursing.

B. Experience
Level I New graduate or less than one (1) year med/surg experience.
Level II Minimum of 4-6 years med/surg experience or comparable.
Level III Meets level II criteria and has a minimum of 7-10 years med/surg experience.
Level IV Meets Level II and III criteria and has a minimum of 10+ years experience in med/surg.

C. Licensure / Certifications / Registrations / Other Criteria
1. Current valid California RN license or Interim Permit.
2. Valid Basic Life Support/Healthcare Provider certification.
3. PALS is required.
Level II, III, & IV
1. Requires Current ACLS Certification or (certification within six months of hire).
Level II
1. CMT course completion within 6 months of hire.
Level IV
1. Meets all Level III criteria, and assumes critical additional responsibilities over and above staff nurse duties delegated by Department Manager. Such as, Disaster Control Coordinator, Infection Control, UR/Discharge Planner, or QM.
2. Current Med/Surg Specialty Certification.

D. Essential Skills
1. Understanding of basic medical terminology.
2. Ability to understand and perform routine emergency treatment tasks and procedures.
3. Ability to accurately perform a head-to-toe assessment on patients of all ages.
4. Ability to understand and carry out written, oral, and/or graphic instructions.
5. Ability to accurately perform intermediate math, including addition, subtraction multiplication, and division. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
6. Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedure or government regulations.
7. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
8. Ability to speak effectively on a one on one and small group situation to patients, visitors, and other employees; and to convey health education to individuals as directed by the emergency department provider.
9. Ability to comply with procedures for infection control and asepsis.
10. Knowledge of med/surg equipment, supplies, and instruments; and the ability to properly use them.
11. Ability to interact with the public in a professional and positive manner.
12. Understanding of and ability to use proper body mechanics to prevent injury to self.
13. Ability to document accurate patient records.
14. Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of your duties.
15. Understanding of the principle, practices, and standards of nursing.
16. Understanding of pharmaceuticals prescribed for patients of all ages.
17. Other Duties as assigned.

C. Special Skills
1. Ability to supervise care provided by para-professionals, i.e. CNA's.
2. Organizational skills and flexibility that allow one to move between the Emergency Department and Acute Care settings comfortably. (Pertains only to those RN’s who qualify to work Emergency Department.)
3. Ability to correctly prioritize tasks in a diverse setting.
4. Ability to perform effectively in a stressful, demanding patient care environment.
