Patient & Visitor Code of Conduct
Our Commitment
At John C. Fremont Healthcare District, we are committed to providing safe, respectful, and compassionate care for all patients, visitors, and members of our workforce.
We recognize that healthcare settings can be difficult and emotional experiences for patients and families. Our commitment is to treat everyone with dignity and respect, and we ask the same in return.
To help maintain a safe environment for everyone, we ask patients, visitors, and guests to follow the expectations below.
What We Ask of You
Patients and visitors are expected to:
- Treat staff and others with respect and consideration
- Follow instructions from the care team and facility guidelines
- Respect patient privacy and confidentiality
- Maintain appropriate behavior in waiting rooms, care areas, and public spaces
- Follow visitation guidelines and infection prevention practices
- Express questions or concerns in a respectful manner
Behaviors That Are Not Permitted
The following behaviors are not permitted and may result in staff intervention, visitation restrictions, removal from the facility when appropriate, and/or involvement of law enforcement.
Threatening or Aggressive Behavior
- Verbal threats or intimidation
- Harassment or offensive language directed toward staff, patients, or visitors
- Yelling, insulting others, or causing disruptions that affect others
- Threats of violence or harm toward people or property
- Repeated unwanted contact or intimidating behavior
Physical Aggression
- Hitting, pushing, kicking, or physically assaulting another person
- Throwing objects
- Damaging property
- Preventing staff from performing their work or accessing patients
Harassment or Discrimination
- Harassment or offensive conduct related to race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, age, or other protected characteristics
Unsafe or Disruptive Conduct
- Possession of weapons, except by on-duty law enforcement as permitted by law
- Use of drugs or alcohol in a manner that creates safety concerns or interferes with care
- Refusal to follow reasonable safety instructions
- Recording, photographing, or livestreaming when prohibited by law or applicable policies
Patient Care Considerations
We recognize that medical conditions, mental health conditions, disabilities, cognitive impairment, traumatic experiences, or emotional circumstances may affect a person's behavior.
Our team will respond with compassion, clinical judgment, and efforts to de-escalate situations whenever appropriate.
Reasonable accommodations will be considered when appropriate and consistent with care and safety needs.
Emergency Care and Legal Considerations
John C. Fremont Healthcare District will continue to comply with all obligations under EMTALA and all applicable federal and California laws.
Emergency medical care will not be denied due to a person's behavior.
