Position Summary

As an On-Site Standby Respiratory Therapist (RT) at John C. Fremont Healthcare District, you will ensure immediate respiratory care availability for urgent and emergent patient needs. This specialized role is dedicated to providing in-house standby coverage, ensuring that a qualified RT is physically present and ready to respond at any moment.

During standby assignments, you will be responsible for rapid response to emergencies and critical interventions, including airway management, ventilator setup and monitoring, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and arterial blood gas testing. You will also provide tracheobronchial suctioning, tracheotomy care, and assist physicians with intubations.

While the primary focus of this position is on-site standby readiness, you will also carry out standard respiratory care functions as needed, ensuring that treatment is delivered safely, effectively, and in compliance with District policies, departmental protocols, and regulatory standards.

Key Responsibilities

Remain on-site during designated standby shifts, ready to respond immediately to emergent patient care needs.

Perform standard and complex diagnostic tests, including arterial blood gases and EKGs.

Administer prescribed respiratory treatments, including medicinal gases and aerosolized medications.

Perform arterial punctures, blood gas analyses, and tracheobronchial suctioning.

Provide tracheotomy care and assist physicians with intubation and ventilator management.

Conduct cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and respond to emergency codes.

Set up and operate respiratory therapy equipment safely and accurately.

Monitor telemetry when required due to staffing or operational needs.

Maintain accurate patient and departmental records, ensuring compliance with quality assurance and infection control policies.

Communicate effectively with physicians, nursing staff, patients, and families.

Minimum Qualifications

Current valid California State Respiratory Care Practitioner License.

Registration by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) and the Respiratory Care Board of California (RBC) as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) or Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT).

Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider certification.

Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Healthcare Provider certification.

Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.

Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) – completion within 90 days of employment.

Cardiac Monitor Tech (CMT) certification – completion within 90 days of employment.

Wage: On-site standby coverage is compensated at the California minimum wage - $16.50.
When performing active duties (e.g., responding to patient care needs, procedures, or emergencies), pay is adjusted to the union wage rate* for all hours worked in accordance with the District’s collective bargaining agreement.

Active-Duty RT Wage: Based on union placement within the listed wage range[$35.70-$45.28]*

Shift Differential: Additional compensation for night shift (active duty)
