Nurse Assistant Certification Training Program

Orientation meeting attendance is mandatory to be considered for entry into the program. The meeting will provide information about nursing assistant duties, the District's expectations, and other criteria.

Class limited to no more than 8 trainees and no less then 3 for the class to proceed.

The Nurse Assistant Certification Training Program is offered as paid on-the-job training, and is offered as full-time temporary employment through the length of the class, at which time the employee will then be designated into a minimum part-time position. Trainees will receive an hourly rate of $17.00 during training. Upon passing the State Certification Exam the employee will receive an increase in hourly rate to the beginning step of Level 1 CNA (currently $19.00/hr). Nursing Assistant employees in a temporary position are not eligible for District employee benefits.

Upon successful completion of the Nurse Assistant Program, the student must take and pass the State Certification Exam in order to become a Certified Nursing Assistant. State Certification is required by the District for Certified Nurse Assistant positions. Upon completion of the training program the full-time temporary status will end. Those student/trainees who successfully complete the program, are eligible for open Certified Nursing positions with the District. Nurse Assistant Student/Trainees are required to show proof of passing the State Certification Exam within four (4) months from the start date of hire (the start of the training program). Non-passing of the State Certification within this time frame will result in termination of employment. Trainees are expected to work for a minimum of one year with the District.

Trainee Status Requirements and Considerations
Trainees must be 18 years of age by the beginning of the Training Program and a high school graduate or GED equivalent.

A prospective student trainee is required to complete a John C. Fremont Healthcare District Employment Application, meet the minimum requirements of the Certified Nursing Assistant job description (minus the State Certification), and attend one of the Orientation meetings. Interviews are performed by a panel of three or more, consisting of two District department heads and another staff member. The admission/temporary employment decision is made by the interview panel, with final approval by the District CEO/Administrator or his/her designee.

Upon offer of acceptance into the Nurse Assistant Certification Program the student trainee must successfully complete the District's pre-employment criteria, consisting of a background check and investigation performed by a consumer reporting agency, a pre-employment physical, including drug and alcohol screening, TB exposure screening, titers to check immunity for measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, and Hepatitis B. If the student trainee is non immune to any of these they must receive a vaccination/s. These required items are done at the District's expense.

Clearance of Conviction / Live Scan Fingerprinting
The student must sign the Clearance of Conviction form stating they have not been convicted of any crime other than a minor traffic violation. (See list of Disqualifying Penal Code Sections, attached to Clearance of Conviction.) If you have a violation, please contact the Department of Health Services at 916-327-2445 to request a clearance of conviction. California State Nurse Assistant Certification is prohibited if there are any convictions listed unless the action has been dismissed or the individual has obtained a Certificate of Rehabilitation. Note: The District reserves the right to deny program acceptance, until proof of clearance of conviction is received from the California Department of Public Health, Licensing and Certification Section.

It is required of all Nurse Assistant students to be fingerprinted as part of the State's Department of Health Services certification process. Students will be Live Scan fingerprinted, prior to beginning any Nurse Assistant training program. The Request for Live Scan Service form is supplied to the student by the District upon acceptance into the program. The Mariposa County Sheriff Department offers the Live Scan Fingerprinting Service.

District provides: Pre-employment physical, including laboratory work
PPD testing
One uniform, colored top and white pant per student
One stethoscope
One Gait Belt
CPR Training/Certification
Live Scan Fingerprinting Fee
Payment of the State's Certification Test fee (initial fee only)

Student provides:
White shoes (comfortable)
Watch with second-hand
Payment of retest, part or full, should student not pass the initial certification test.
