Department: Emergency
Shift: Per Diem
Representation: This is a Union represented position and is represented by AFSCME Local 2703

Job Summary:
• Works under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse and/or Emergency Room Physician.
• Provides patient care based on individual needs within the scope of practice.
• Assists nursing and medical staff with various clinical and non-clinical tasks.
• Performs clerical and indirect patient care duties to support efficient department operations.
• Prepares for and assists with medical procedures and examinations.
• Ensures a clean, safe, and organized environment in the emergency department.
• Maintains accurate and timely documentation of care and department-related activities.
• Communicates effectively with patients, families, and members of the healthcare team.

Essential Skills:
• Assists with emergency patient care, including obtaining and recording vital signs.
• Recognizes and reports changes in patient condition promptly.
• Supports procedures such as laceration care, burn treatments, overdose response, orthopedic care, and exams.
• Assists with incision and drainage procedures, including set-up and clean-up.
• Provides support during CPR, triage, and patient preparation for treatment and transport.
• Applies dressings, provides basic wound care, and assists with first aid.
• Assists with pediatric care during procedures.
• Supports patient transfers and completes required documentation.
• Performs and documents Point of Care Testing.
• Performs and assists with EKGs, cardiac monitoring, and labeling.
• Assists with specimen collection and preparation for laboratory transport.
• Inputs admitting and billing information accurately using department systems.
• Maintains inventory, stocks exam rooms, and orders supplies cost-effectively.
• Cleans and stores instruments and equipment properly.
• Maintains organized and clean work and patient care areas.
• Operates medical and office equipment per protocols.
• Documents communication with labs, radiology, and other departments accurately.
• Understands and applies basic medical terminology and anatomy.
• Performs emergency treatment tasks and procedures within EMT scope of practice.
• Demonstrates effective interpersonal and communication skills.
• Maintains professional relationships with patients, families, and healthcare staff.
• Complies with infection control, quality assurance, and confidentiality policies.
• Adheres to all District and Emergency Department policies and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications:
· High School graduate or equivalent.
· Current valid California Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certification.
· Cardiac Monitor Technician certification (or obtain within 6 months of hire).
· Valid Basic Life Support/Healthcare Provider certification.
· One-year previous experience in acute hospital setting or ambulance highly preferred.
